William Shakespeare, The Tempest, Page 25, Line 216-217
<

In class today we talked about what we could pack to take with us in a bag that’s regular school bag sized. The whole point of this activity as I take it is to put yourself into Anne Frank’s shoes and see how hard it is to choose what you want to take with you among the million things that you own. Let me ask all you readers a question, What is just one thing that’s closest to your heart that you can take with you, and never regret your choice? I mean, think about it. Personally, I feel this would be a very hard decision, as you can never go back on it. All your life you have to live, feeling so bad about how maybe you could have taken something better with you to help your survival.

Connecting back to my previous journal entry, I feel this was also one act of courage that Anne Frank displayed. It is not an easy task taking with you very little of your personal belongings and knowing that you will never see the dear old face of home again. Since we might be technologically unequipped, I will not choose any such gadgets. Maybe I would take with me a dictionary, a blank notebook, a pen, battery operated radio, batteries, medicines, a brush, soap, a couple of hair ties, a toothbrush and toothpaste, an inflatable pillow, a plate, a glass and cutlery.

Taking with me a dictionary, pen, and paper will help me write, not necessarily diary entries like Anne Frank did, but also other creativity-enhancing poetry or prose. The battery operated radio will help me stay connected with the world, and I will use it to the bare minimum, as otherwise the batteries will run out and leave me in the dark. I will also carry with me the essential medication for general illnesses like headaches, fevers, or stomach cramps. The brush, soap, and hair ties will be among the last few items that I would choose, as sooner or later, the outside beauty will matter no more. The toothbrush and toothpaste will help me feel fresh all day, but only until the toothpaste runs out. For a good night’s sleep, my inflatable pillow will come in handy. All the dinner items mentioned will be used only if food is available, as if the food really is available and there’s no means to eat it, it’s not very tasteful anymore. Ultimately, all these items are the basic necessities a person may think of.

It would scare me beyond imagination of how, if I had to, I would spend all my life in one room. Think about it. Would you?

    Sai/Gayathri,

Wow you seemed to have thought of everything. Medication…I would have never thought of that though come to think of it, it will be useful when one is sick or in a life death situation. Alot of everday items such as soap will keep you clean and less sicknessess shall pass, for it is very easy to pass when in a confined area such as a tiny room. Anyways I like the way you thought of everything, but I think a radio isn’t so necessary for there will be a care taker that will help you guys and you can simply get information of the outer world form him/her. Everything else looks great and you’re good to go ^^.

I love your sense of audience and “talking” to your readers. This is great Voice! Your items seem very practical and well thought out.

Here is some quick criticism of your style.

#1: This looks very dense, perhaps you want to space it out with paragraphs or spaces.
#2: When you say, “Connecting back to my previous journal entry, I feel this was also one act of courage” You should make a direct link to that post!
#3: Talk to me about the pictures.

    Nicely done!

    Novia,
Yes, if I ever have an awesome helper like Miep I wouldn’t need a radio, but I put one on my list as a worst case scenario item. Thanks for commenting!

    Alia,
We are setting up blogs so that we have a better audience — not just the teacher. And you should read everyone’s blogs, they are all excellent! Also take a look at the poems, stories, thoughts and various other entries people have on their blogs — it will drive you insane! Thanks for commenting,
